More About Me.

Claire Hankey Artist

I am a mixed media artist living in Leigh on Sea, Essex. I create work on a variety of scales, using mainly acrylics, collage and more recently, oil and cold wax. In my work, capturing how it feels to be out in nature rather than depicting how it appears, takes priority. Every painting is an ongoing dialogue and takes weeks of deliberation, which is why I often work in pairs, creating paintings that can happily sit together.

Recently my work has become more textural and I've been experimenting with new methods and techniques. The older I get, the more I love plants, the shadows they cast and how they appear silhouetted against the backdrop of the sky. Textures on worn surfaces are also fascinating to me, I love how surface texture can reveal the passing of time and the story of a place. I often collect plants and fallen branches on my dog walks, I use these to create unique, hand made brushes which help me to create exciting and unexpected marks within my drawings and paintings.

My first ever solo exhibition took place in May 2022 at Create98 in my hometown of Leigh on Sea, Essex.

The exhibition entitled 'Foraged Marks', consisted of over 30 experimental drawings and paintings using plants and natural brushes within the process. Alongside the exhibition, I ran a workshop at the venue sharing my process of making natural brushes.

In September 2022 , I took part in the ever growing Leigh Art Trail. For this exhibition I created a series of 14 paintings entitled 'Solstice' which were inspired by the changes in light and atmostphere during the Summer Solstice. My most recent I collection of paintings are currently exhibited at Aldeburgh Contemporary in Suffolk. These artworks were created in response to the Autumnal Equinox and my observations on estuary walks around this time. You can view this paintings via their website below.

I also have a range of works on paper, canvas and wood at The Squeeze cafe on Leigh Broadway. I am lucky enough to curate the wall space of this beautiful cafe, which was once an art gallery! In 2023, I'm looking forward to The Leigh Art Trail in June, workshops throughout the year and an exciting group exhibition at The Lightbox in Surrey in the Autumn.
