An Artist in Marrakech

Inspiration from Marrakech

So I finally got to visit Marrakech recently and from an artists standpoint, it completely blew me away.

Marrakech reveals itself through colour. Walking through the medina, the first thing that strikes you is the pink ochre that coats its walls in endless variations. Some buildings glow warm terracotta, others shift toward pale apricot or weathered sandstone. Together they create an atmosphere that feels timeless and full of life.

As an artist working in print, paint and collage, I was captivated by the subtle transitions in tone and texture. I carried my camera everywhere, drawn to faded doorways, intricate tiles, woven screens and glimpses of green against rose-coloured walls.

Hiring a guide for the medina turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. At around £40 for a half day, it offers incredible value. The medina is a maze of narrow lanes and hidden courtyards, and with a local guide we gained access to places and insights we never would have found alone. We met artisans at work, learned about the traditions behind their crafts, and came away with a far richer understanding of the city.

We stayed at Le Farnatchi, a historic riad in the heart of the medina. With only ten individually designed suites, it feels both intimate and refined. The space is filled with contemporary and historical works by local artists, and each room blends modern comfort with traditional detail. Ours included a marble sunken bath and a rooftop balcony that looked out over the old city. From there, the pink tones of Marrakech softened beautifully in the changing light. My favourite times of day here were during the call to prayer, where the chants could be heard across the rooftops, it was so atmospheric.

The trip left me deeply inspired; by the way colours and patterns merge, by the craftsmanship woven into daily life, and by the rhythm of a city steeped in creativity.
