The Perfect Size for a painting– Why 75 x 75cm is My Goldilocks Painting Size

If you’ve ever stood in front of a blank wall wondering what size painting to choose, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common things people ask me and I totally understand why.

There’s something magical about getting the scale just right. It’s not always about going bigger or choosing what’s “on trend” — it’s about finding that Goldilocks size. For me, that’s 75 x 75cm.

Why 75 x 75cm works so well

I’ve found this to be the sweet spot in so many ways. Here’s why:

  • It’s impactful without being overpowering. Large enough to create presence, but not so big that it dominates the space.

  • It suits lots of different rooms. Whether you’re styling above a console, in a hallway, or as a feature in a living area, this size adapts beautifully.

  • It’s easy to live with and can fit in between your picture rail (if you have them) and the top of your sofa easily.

  • It can double up nicely above a sofa or bed, but also it's perfect above a fireplace!

Of course, every space is unique. But this size often offers that 'just right' feeling, especially in modern homes where people want their art to feel considered and effortless.

A few general tips for choosing the right sized art.

If you’re not sure where to begin, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Consider the space, not just the wall

Think about the feeling you want to create. Is it soft and serene? Bold and energising? The scale of the artwork plays a big part in shaping that atmosphere.

2. Use the 60–75% rule

A good guide is to aim for your artwork to be about two-thirds the width of the furniture it sits above. This helps everything feel visually connected and grounded.

3. Don’t default to small

One of the most common mistakes I see is choosing art that’s too small. It can make a space feel unfinished. Try going slightly bigger than you first think, it often feels more balanced.

4. Group smaller pieces with intention

Love small works? Try curating a gallery wall or hanging in pairs or trios. Look for common threads in tone or framing to bring a sense of unity.

5. Tape it out

Not sure what size will work? Use masking tape or paper to try different dimensions on the wall. It’s a simple way to visualise the effect before you commit.

Still not sure?

Art is personal and choosing the right piece is about more than just measurements. But if you’re looking for a size that feels calm, contemporary, and effortlessly elegant, 75 x 75cm might just be your Goldilocks too. This is the size I chose for my new collection TIME- you can view this below and see how well this sized painting fits in different spaces.
